As you may have seen in the NY Times, Assemblyman Jack
McEneny (D)Albany, is re-introducing legislation that would make the
force-feeding of a bird for foie gras illegal.
Please contact your local senators and assemblypersons
and strongly urge them to support the respective bills:
A 1821 (Assembly)- in Agriculture Committee since March
24;
S 5153 (Senate) - in Rules Committee since May 19
Ask your senate and assembly reps to do whatever it
takes to get the bills out of committee for a full vote, including getting
the Chairs of each committee to move these bills out of committee!
McEneny's office says some members will be reluctant to
challenge the Farm lobby. Tell legislators to familiarize themselves with
the foie gras controversy now, so they can be prepared
for the next legislative session. Remind them that Israel, a major
foie gras producer, is fazing it out by 2005; this
time span gives the 'poor' fg employees time to find another career. Remind
them how embarrassing it is that NY still deals in such archaic cruelty.
