Be kind to the animals
Published in NY Newsday, Oct 8, 2001:
For several years now, in an effort to avoid the wrath
of various minorities, tv and movie comedies have fixated on bashing animals
as a safe target of supposed humor. Most recently, a horrific example of
this trend involves a movie ad featuring a dog being hurled from a fiery
explosion.
Not only is this not funny, it is in incredibly bad
taste, considering recent tragic events. If this had involved a person, the
ad would have been pulled immediately.
It's time the media afforded the same respect to each
and every sentient being. There's a link between violence to animals and
human-to-human violence. Just as cruelty to animals by humans promotes
cruelty toward other humans, kindness to animals by humans promotes
human-to-human kindness, improving the quality of life for everyone.
