THE BRUNT OF THE HUNT

January 18, 2004 -- Ken Moran writes that the New Jersey bear hunt season "went perfectly" ("Cloning of Deer, N.J. Bear Hunt Highlighted '03," Sports, Jan. 4). It was free of accidents, he writes, and 328 bears were "harvested."

The hunt accomplished something else as well: It showed that while the killer instinct remains in some people, the human race's evolution continues, as cries against this hunt rang out loud and clear.
