Letters GIMME SHELTER Published in ' letters to the editor' in the March '05 issue of
WESTCHESTER MAGAZINE
www.westchestermagazine.com While I applaud your efforts to acknowledge the bond between humans and
their companion animals in your February issue, I was extremely disheartened
and disappointed to see no mention of local animal shelters or rescue
groups. These individuals help to insure the well-being of all of
Westchester's animals, not only those who qualify as 'pampered pets.' Your
encouragement of adopting purebred over the 'standard tabby' or 'plain old
alley cat' is offensive and nothing short of irresponsible, when we look at
the countless number of loving animals that are euthanized in this county
each year for want of good homes. Many of these so-called 'purebreds' suffer from inherent genetic diseases
brought on by irresponsible breeding, resulting in a painful experience for
both the animal and guardian. I would hope that a future issue of your
magazine would highlight the plight of the 'other half' of Westchester's
companion animal population. Lydia S. Antoncic, Esq. Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
