Animal Atrocities

Published in AM NEW YORK  March 7, 2006, Letters to the Editor:

"Animal Atrocities"

It is unfortunate that the real issue of animal exploitation and cruelty is getting lost in legal rhetoric during the Huntington Life Sciences trial ('Jury Convicts Animal Welfare Activists,' 3/3). All liberation movements - for people or animals - are, by definition, disruptive, challenging, upsetting to the status quo and push the legal envelope. To fully understand the motivation for these particular efforts, you must view the undercover video taken at an HLS facility: you will see footage of a beagle puppy who refused to sit quietly while being stabbed with needles, being yelled at, sworn at, shaken and repeatedly punched in the head by a Huntington scientist. And one can see a monkey, clearly conscious, lifting her head from an operating table, while her chest is cut wide open. I have a difficult time just reading about these horrifying atrocities, much less viewing them. This explodes the myth of tests being done 'humanely.' The $50,000 fine issued by the USDA was trivial punishment for a company like HLS.
