Letters
Be kind to animals
Letter published, NY Daily News May 23, 2013
Brooklyn: To the people of North Hempstead and elsewhere who regard
Canada geese as invasive, disease-carrying pests: They’re migratory
birds native to North America listed for protection under the Migratory
Bird Treaty Act of 1918 because of their near-extinction from
overhunting.
No public health agency has ever declared Canada geese a direct threat
to human health. We’re prepared to tolerate teachers carrying firearms
in schools and children wearing bulletproof vests, yet we have no will
to accommodate these benign animals who tolerate us.
Let’s show our children how we can live with geese, not with guns.
