Savannah, an elephant at the El Paso Zoo, infamous for
beating Sissy the elephant in 1998, is now alone after the death of her
long-time companion Mona. We are sure that Savannah, more than anyone
else, is grieving her passing. While the zoo was closed each day for
more than 10 hours, it was Savannah and Mona who kept each other
company. It is important that during this difficult time for Savannah,
choices are made in her best interest. The zoo has refused to retire
Savannah, claiming she has excellent care at the zoo but she doesnt
have the freedom awaiting her. Please contact the Mayor and City Council
of El Paso and ask that they allow Savannah to retire to the Elephant
Sanctuary (www.elephants.com) where she can roam several hundred acres,
swim in the spring fed ponds, roll in the many mud pits and thrive in
the company of the 7 other retired elephants, including Sissy, her old
friend from El Paso who retired there 2 years ago. Savannah is nearly 50
years old and has served the public long enoughit is time for her to
retire. Only through the same local and national pressure that freed
Sissy can we help Savannah. Please email, fax, or call the Mayors
office. Contact:
