Farmed animals, and their human friends, are celebrating
the creation of Peaceable Kingdom: the Los Angeles Farm Animal Sanctuary &
Compassionate Living Center. The Peaceable Kingdom Sanctuary is directed
by Lorri (Bauston) Houston, who started the country's first shelter for
farmed animals in 1986 as the Co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, Inc.
Considered the "pioneer" of the farmed animal sanctuary movement, she has
directly rescued and provided lifelong care for over 5,000 animals rescued
from factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses.
The Peaceable Kingdom Sanctuary is located on a beautiful
26 acre farm just 40 minutes from Los Angeles. The sanctuary has two large
animal housing barns and an education building adjacent to the barns,
complete with a kitchen facility for special events, public rooms for
meetings, video viewing and exhibits, and a beautiful public gathering
courtyard.
Peaceable Kingdom will offer a variety of programs to
encourage people to live in harmony and peace with all beings. As an
Official Sponsor of the project, Native Foods (voted LA's #1 veg
restaurant) is teaming up with the organization to create fun and
delicious ways to promote vegetarianism. Humane education tours will
provide a unique education destination for hundreds of thousands of
students in the L.A. and surrounding school districts. Sanctuary special
events will bring celebrity spokespersons and their farmed animal friends
together to open hearts and minds to the cruelties of meat, dairy and egg
production, and teach people that farmed animals are not breakfast, lunch
or dinner.
The GRAND OPENING of the sanctuary is scheduled for
September 17th. Peaceable Kingdom is in need of volunteers and sponsors to
help create the new sanctuary. Volunteer "Farm Chore Days" will be held
the first Saturday of each month beginning on May 7th. For more
