Sandhill Crane
(Grus canadensis)

This study was done with gouache watercolours on paper, and shows a species that breed across the northern part of North America, from Alaska to Ontario, with discreet breeding populations in Florida and the U.S. southeast. They are highly migratory and most common in numbers in the more western regions, including the high plains, and winter deep into Mexico, and in the West Indies.

Here in Ontario, their numbers are increasing. The vignette painting was done to illustrate a magazine article.
