Sanderling (Calidris alba)

(Artwork - 092)
Sanderling (Calidris alba)

The Sanderling is one of the most widely distributed of all birds. It nests in the high arctic, and winters in both temperate and tropical regions, south deep into the southern hemisphere. This means it can occur almost anywhere in the world where there are shorelines on major bodies of water, including large inland lakes and rivers. Where I live, near the north shore of Lake Ontario, it is a commonly seen migrant, spring and fall.

The adult in full breeding plumage is very reddish in colour, but even in May flocks are mixed, as I have shown.

These birds are famous for their habit of running along the beach, often just at the water’s edge, so usually on wet sand. They have evolved for running, having lost the hind toe that their close relatives – other species of sandpipers – have.

This painting is approximately life-size, in acrylics on compressed hardboard panel.
