Horse-Drawn Carriage Accident

A feisty horse broke free from its handler while walking in a St. Patrick's Day parade, charged into a crowd and hurt four people, firefighters said. All the injuries were described as minor. The privately owned, brown-and-white horse grew agitated during the Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday afternoon. The animal got loose and plowed into people near the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 106th Street, witnesses said. "There were two people crying on the ground," said witness Michelle Santoro, 16. A child and two adults were taken to hospitals, the Fire Department said. A fourth person, who was either a police officer or a firefighter, was treated at the scene, firefighters said. Police soon corralled the horse a few blocks away. It was tethered to a fence, where it could be seen pawing the ground after the incident. The Queens parade, one of the city's biggest, is held the first Saturday in March each year .
