Central Park horse-drawn carriage smacked by taxi cab, four people hurt

From Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, July 26, 2011

Three tourists and a hansom cab driver were hurt when a taxi struck their carriage at the edge of Central Park, police said Tuesday.

The accident occurred just before midnight Monday when the yellow cab rear-ended the buggy in front of the posh hotels along Central Park South.

"A lady was thrown out of the carriage, all the way to the sidewalk," said Gyamfi Frempong, a night manager at The Helmsley Park Lane Hotel.

The horse was knocked to the street when the buggy flipped on its side, witnesses said, but later got to its feet.

"The carriage was on top of the horse," said Krystal Bua, 25, who was working at nearby Whiskey Park.

The buggy's 70-year-old driver, Salvatore Terranova, of the Bronx, was in critical condition with a head injury at Cornell Medical Center but is expected to live, cops said.

The three passengers - all tourists from Ohio - suffered minor injuries at were treated and released at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, cops said.

The horse suffered cuts to its body but a police veterinarian determined they were minor enough for the animal to be returned to its stable.

Witnesses told police the taxi driver had been in the middle lane of Central Park South when it hit the carriage. But the driver, Kotey Djanie, 42, of Newark, said he was in the far right lane and was unable to stop in time when the buggy pulled into traffic from the parking lane.

No charges are expected to be filed.
