Goldfish are known as the “lab rats” of the aquatic research world. They are used in abundance and almost never survive. They are commonly exposed to noxious or poisons agents to determine at what quantity or concentration these chemicals become lethal.

Big or small, wet or dry – if they are laboratory animals we will rescue them. In January BFP saved its first two research fish for a university research center in the Midwest. These two goldfish, Willy and Nemo, are now enjoying their own aquarium, fun topiary, and friendly faces peering in!

Nemo and Willy were used in sound experiments. Although this sounds seemingly harmless the percussive noise waves that reverberated through their environment caused a serious degree of trauma. Nemo appears to be recovering from a mild concussion.

These two come from a Midwestern university research lab and were said to have been subjected to ‘sound experiments.’ Nemo, the bigger of the two, may have been concussed and is slowly recovering. Like beagles, these two goldfish are curious, quirky, and crazy for food! They will act like they are starving in their fishy attempts at begging. Nemo and Willy are settling into their new aquarium life well and love using the topiary as convenient areas to rest their bodies.

Beagle Freedom Project judges the value of a life not on whether the animal can cuddle with us, but on their capacity to feel pain and happiness. Fish are sentient, intelligent, and social little creatures are we are proud to have saved at least these two!
