“This is a truly horrific case of people abusing animals for their own sick pleasure. It is unfortunate this pair weren’t granted a lifetime ban but we applaud the Scottish SPCA for their dedication and hard work in bringing Colin and David Reid to justice.”

Two brothers have been jailed and banned from keeping dogs for five years after being convicted of serious dog fighting offences in Scotland. Twenty four year old Colin Reid was sentenced to four months in jail while his 22 year old brother David faces a six month jail term.

The pair were arrested following a Scottish SPCA investigation. Banff Sheriff Court heard the brothers admit to encouraging bull terrier type dogs to attack each other in what the Scottish SPCA described as “the heinous crime of dog fighting”.

The Scottish SPCA searched the brothers’ homes in Banff and Macduff in January this year where they found three aggressive looking dogs in kennels and a puppy at one address. The three older dogs had various wounds on their bodies. At Colin Reid’s home inspectors found a bull terrier type dog and a patterdale terrier. At a separate address video footage was uncovered showing the brothers actively fighting their dogs and using sticks to break them up before encouraging them to attack again. The brothers can be heard in the film shouting encouragement at the dog as they fought.

Deputy head of campaigns at the League, Louise Robertson said: “This is a truly horrific case of people abusing animals for their own sick pleasure. It is unfortunate this pair weren’t granted a lifetime ban but we applaud the Scottish SPCA for their dedication and hard work in bringing Colin and David Reid to justice.”
