Of course, farmed animals will still suffer, and Animal Aid will continue to promote a cruelty-free vegan diet as the only way to stop that completely, but if we can now prevent some of the appalling brutality that our cameras revealed, then we have a duty to do so.

The law was being broken in seven out of the eight slaughterhouses in which we have filmed.

From Kim Stallwood:

Congratulations to Animal Aid for their excellent undercover campaign in British slaughterhouses which included installing CCTV cameras to record not only the routine killing of farmed animals but also their cruel treatment. The Guardian prominently features the campaign today (1/27/11) including undercover footage exposing cruelties.

There’s been more important progress for Animal Aid’s CCTV-in-slaughterhouses campaign. The objective is to persuade supermarkets to insist that all their meat suppliers install independently monitored CCTV cameras in both the stunning and the slaughter areas, in order to prevent some of the appalling illegal brutality revealed by our undercover investigations. The law was being broken in seven out of the eight slaughterhouses in which we have filmed.

We had already had two massive breakthroughs, with Morrisons and Marks and Spencer saying ‘Yes’ to the cameras and to the independent monitoring of the resulting footage. Now the Co-op, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have also agreed. We are keeping up the pressure on the whole supermarket industry with a letter-writing campaign that's launched this month through a mailing to our supporters, and via more national newspaper adverts on February the 5th and March the 6th. In addition, we have received encouraging replies from Aldi, Asda, Booker, Iceland, Lidl and Tesco. They have all either started installing CCTV in their own slaughterhouses and/or started the process of insisting that their suppliers do the same. None have refused to co-operate, and so, with continued encouragement from correspondence, postcards and newspaper advertisements, we believe that we can go on to win this campaign.

Of course, farmed animals will still suffer, and Animal Aid will continue to promote a cruelty-free vegan diet as the only way to stop that completely, but if we can now prevent some of the appalling brutality that our cameras revealed, then we have a duty to do so.
