Police in Thailand have managed to rescue over 1,000 dogs that were destined to be cooked and eaten. The dogs, which were crammed into tiny cages stacked high on the back of trucks, were en route to Vietnam but were saved when the police intercepted the vehicles in two raids in Nathom and Si Songkhram districts close to the border with Laos.

Livestock officials in Nakhom Phanom have confirmed 1,011 dogs are being looked after in government shelters – sadly, 119 died as a result of suffocation or when they were thrown in the trucks as the traffickers tried to flee the scene.

The men face a maximum sentence of one year in jail, and a fine of up to 20,000 baht ($670).
