Two Giant Environmental Successes in Congress

It's an incredibly satisfying feeling when issues that we here at Care2 have been working on for years finally can claim success. And this week, we had two of them!

First, on Tuesday, the EPA halted dozens of mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining permits, pending a review of their impact on rivers and streams. And since we all know that the impact on rivers and streams is devastating, we're optimistic that this will ultimately lead to alternatives to MTR.

Many of our nonprofit partners, including Sierra Club and EarthJustice, have fought to stop MTR mining for years and years, and now we are one step closer to that goal being reached. Thanks to these amazing organizations for their hard work!

Then, Congress passed an act that has monumental impact on our wilderness. The Omnibus Public Land Management Act protects more than 2 million acres of America's wild lands, rivers and cultural sites. (You can read the key provisions of the Act in this PDF).

This bill also makes the National Landscape Conservation System official. According to the BLM website, the NLCS "includes over 850 federally recognized areas and approximately 27 million acres of National Conservation Areas, National Monuments, Wilderness Areas, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails."

The Wilderness Society, one of our nonprofit partners, has been fighting for the passage of this bill for a very long time.

These two victories are truly a testament to the power people can have. Thousands of public comments, petition signatures and letters were sent about these issues, and our decision makers listened. Congratulations on these two amazing successes.
