July 7, 2008The effort to ban horse-drawn carriages from the streets near Central Park has hit full gallop, with animal-rights activists and celebs teaming up to try to put the industry out to pasture.
Alec Baldwin, pop singer Pink and rocker Chrissie Hynde are among those charging that hansom cabs promote animal cruelty and endanger New Yorkers.
While some insist they're not out to eliminate the industry, hard-liners want it shut down.
"My first inclination was to try to find a way to do a better job," Brooklyn Councilman Tony Avella said after seven accidents and two traffic-related horse deaths in three years. "But I [now see] that . . . to make a profit, there's no way for them to treat the horses properly."
The horses, often old, are not only exposed to Midtown traffic, but also must navigate a maze of streets twice a day to get to and from their cramped and antiquated Far West Side stable.
