Animals ARE comrades in our fight for social progress, not merely as symbols but as agents of their own - and consequently, our - liberation.

Abhi Em and comrade...

Progressives love when nonhuman animals unwittingly act as purveyors of human progress.

Whether they're a bird perching on a progressive politician's podium, a Greek dog fighting cops, or a fly sitting on a homophobe's head, they've become unwitting emblems of resistance by simply going about their everyday lives.

The problem is that that is what they remain: mere emblems. These individual animals are still denied their agency and act as empty vessels that earn temporary symbolic significance through involuntary political resistance. I just wish progressives also recognized nonhumans' voluntary resistance. Billions of animals fight for freedom and safety every single day and we largely ignore them unless they personally or symbolically affect us.

I also wish progressives recognized the huge potential of comradeship with other animals. They may never be able to act as organized activists in human rights movements but their liberation will always be tied to ours. Workers in slaughterhouses, communities of color affected by environmental racism, slaves in the fishing industry, impoverished humans in food deserts, and the whole working class in general could reap the immense benefits of the movement for animal rights.

Animals ARE comrades in our fight for social progress, not merely as symbols but as agents of their ownóand consequently, ouróliberation.
