Pirate, the Saddest Fox

From Andrew Skowron
Facebook posting, November 14, 2023

On the fur farm, he was one of its oldest residents. He was a fox used for breeding therefore he lived in a cage for about 5 years. Exhausted, abused to the limit. His eyes saw more than one slaughter of his caged companions. We named him Pirate, that's because his eye was in a terrible state.

Pirate the Fox

This fox is the saddest fox we have encountered on fur farms during our many investigative activities.

In addition to the sick eye, Pirate has an ear inflammation, is in a terrible state, rotting gums, and, numerous degenerations of the spine.

He is now safe, was rescued urgently, and taken to a veterinary clinic. It is known that he has suspected metastatic lung cancer. The last of the diagnostic tests took place at the University of Life Sciences, where he was scanned by one of the two newest tomographs in Poland, we are waiting for the results.

At this point, a wave of heckling began in the Internet world. The photo of the fox and the tomograph has sparked a discussion about the sense of treating the fox with such expensive equipment and triggered a wave of criticism declaring us crazy. Comments are not worth quoting so I will not do it.

I will write only that yes this fox deserves to be examined with such expensive equipment by the best specialists.

No amount of hectoring comments by frustrated people will make us stop treating him.

Dear haters: I'm not interested in the fact that you have to wait several weeks for a CT scanner, that's your problem. Fox Pirate waited only one week. The pirate, after 5 years of suffering, deserves to be treated like a sentient animal with the right to care. The fur industry should indisputably be banned and closed down.

UPDATE November 18

We said goodbye to the Pirate.

Recent diagnostics and CT scan results made us realize that the rescued fox Pirate is suffering greatly. His five years on the farm had led his body to extreme cachexia. Numerous tumors in major internal organs including a tumor attacking the brainstem, a pancreatic tumor, and numerous tumors in the lungs. The only right decision was to euthanize him and shorten his suffering. Pirate received the best care for several days.

There are thousands of such Pirates on fur farms and they continue to suffer. Banning the breeding of animals for fur is the only solution to end this practice. We will fight until the last empty cage.

Fox Pirate

He died being loved for the first time in his life...
