Two Choices:
Compassion or Exploitation

October 3, 2011

Welcome to the weekly CVA blog!  In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

1. A Carnist’s Opinion

3. Giving Farmed Animals a Voice
4. Bible verse: 2 Chronicles 15:7
5. Eggs Represent Suffering and Death
6. This Week’s Video: Why Vegan?

1. A Carnist’s Opinion

Joshua Greenman, NY Daily News staff writer, recognizes and in some way praises that the animal rights movement has not only produced palpable successes but has created an unstoppable tide that is leading humanity to an ethical evolution and revolution. He points out that these changes comprise every facet of our lives and non-human animal lives: from animals used in experimentation to animals exploited for food. To read the article, please visit: The slow but steady animal rights revolution, from 'Planet of the Apes' to slaughter-free meat:

It is undeniable that a compassionate and ethical movement is growing and that many barbaric and truthfully anachronistic practices are coming to an end, such as the banning of animals in circuses in many countries around the word. However, the most voluminous exploitation of God’s animals takes place in the hands of the animal agriculture industry. Over 55 billion land animals are raised and killed every year worldwide, involving much pain, fear and suffering. Unless this practice comes to and end, we cannot claim to have become a more ethical or evolved society.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

There is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to beasts as well as man it is all a sham.

~ Anna Sewell, Black Beauty

3. Giving Farmed Animals a Voice

A fantastic new campaign led by Mercy for Animals (MFA) http://www.mercyforanimals.org  is challenging hundreds of thousands of daily commuters and visitors traveling in and around the Chicago area to look at their food differently. This new pro-vegetarian campaign involves advertisement in strategic places such as subways, trains, buses, etc. The ads, for example, show an adorable puppy and a lovable piglet sitting side-by-side and ask, "Why love one but eat the other?" and also, "How much cruelty can you swallow?" by featuring a heartbreaking image of a mother pig locked in a tiny gestation crate. To learn more please visit Hundreds of New MFA Transit Ads Give Farmed Animals a Voice in the Windy City:

MFA is doing such a great job at challenging the mindset that some animals are pets and some food. By raising awareness on such an erroneous ethical belief and by exposing the unimaginable suffering God’s farmed animals endure, people are forced to evaluate their values and beliefs and hopefully align their choice of diet with them.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse

(RSV) 2 Chronicles 15:7

But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”

Many times hardship and disappointment make us feel discouraged; however, perseverance is a powerful character trait, and can bring about a breakthrough when nothing else does.

5. Eggs Represent Suffering and Death

Julia Galef, writer, public speaker and member of the board of directors of the New York City Skeptics, a non-profit organization promoting science education and critical thinking, writes a very compelling article that will help the reader understand that his/her food choices, have a great impact on animals. Galef argues that in order to reduce as much the number of animals slaughtered for food, one needs to give up eggs first, because of the unwanted male chicks and the caloric content of eggs vs. meat. In addition, she argues that although the number of animals killed for food is important at the time of making decisions, the amount of suffering should be taken into account as well. To read the article please visit Want to Kill Fewer Animals? Give Up Eggs:
http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/2011/08/11/want-to-kill-fewer-animals-give-up-eggs-not-meat/

Indeed, egg-laying eggs are the most abused of God's animals in the food industry. They suffer tremendous pain, confinement and fear from birth to death, which is usually about 18 months. The extent of exploitation of these creatures is unimaginable and unacceptable. In the eyes of egg-laying hens, humans represent the devil. If we believe we share God's essence of love, shouldn’t we show love and compassion to God's farmed animals?

6. This Week’s Video: Why Vegan?

“Why Vegan?” is a wonderful short video that illustrates why so many people around the world choose to adopt a compassionate lifestyle in hopes to alleviate as much suffering as possible.

It also clearly depicts what speciesism is and its lack of ethical basis. Please visit Why Vegan? and share with friends and family:
