1. The Sobering Reality of Antibiotic Overuse

This sobering read exposes the extremely irresponsible practice of overusing antibiotics in animals raised for food. About 80% of all antibiotics sold in the world are given to healthy food animals to help promote growth and allow cheaper production methods, which in turn leads to the development of antibiotic resistant superbugs. Public health experts see signs that we are returning to a time when children died of pneumonia and other illnesses since bacteria mutate faster than we create new antibiotics.

As long as we all have cheap, factory-farmed meat, eggs and dairy, big ag, pharmaceutical companies and the government don’t seem to care about antibiotic resistant bugs, animal welfare, or environmental devastation. This is why it’s so important that the clear message comes from the consumer and a coalition of health, animal and environment advocacy organizations because the change is not coming from the top down.

2. Famous Quote

“I mostly eat healthy. I just do. I'm not a vegan for health reasons - although obviously I'm 20 pounds lighter than when I started. I stayed 20 pounds lighter. I feel better. My friends say I look better. All that's true. But I'm a vegan for compassionate reasons.”

~ Russell Simmons

3. Veganism on the Rise

Nobel Prize winning economist Alvin Roth, professor at Stanford and Harvard, predicts that “meat eating might become repugnant” to the general population in the near future. He adds, ““We already don’t eat whale. We think whales might be smart. The next question is cows.”

It’s a matter of time before humans see cows, chickens, pigs and fish the same way they look at dogs, cats and whales. Ethics challenges us to include all sentient beings in our sphere of compassion, which is exactly what Christ’s teachings ask us to do.

4. Bible Verse

(RSV) Exodus 14:14

“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be still."

I think this passage stresses the idea of mindfulness. When we quiet our minds and learn to be mindful, we get in touch with God’s wisdom, our inner-wisdom, which brings out the compassion, sensitivity, heartfullness and nurturing instinct in us. In turn, the way we relate to the world changes and we help change the world into a better one.
