Rabbits and more

A recent article written by Agnieszka Tennant, senior associate editor of Christianity Today, reminds us of God’s essence in every creature, not just humans.

Ms. Tennant writes with reverence about rabbits and raises the issue of why people don’t take the time to learn what rabbits are truly about, with their complex behaviors and interactions; but more importantly, with the life God breathed in them.

The writer certainly shows she has discovered the hand of God in her rabbits and that she has been able to see them as more than just pets or even food.

She quotes 18th century writer and poet William Cowper reminding us that there have always been people who made the choice to defend animals, in this case rabbits. He said, “You will not wonder, Sir, that my intimate acquaintance with these specimens of the kind has taught me to hold the sportsman's amusements in abhorrence; he little knows what amiable creatures he persecutes, of what gratitude they are capable, how cheerful they are in spirits, what enjoyments they have of life, and that impressed as they seem with a peculiar dread of man, it is only because man gives them peculiar cause for it.”

Agnieszka Tennant’s perception of rabbits is certainly accurate. They are living, sentient beings who have been created lovingly and with a purpose: to be our companions and helpers on Earth.
