S. Korea Rejects US Beef Shipment
The finding of high dioxin levels in an American beef shipment to
South Korea meant bad news for the U.S. cattle industry after an almost
three-year ban over mad cow disease.
According to Kim Mee-kyung, a senior researcher at the quarantine
service, dioxin is sometimes found in beef because of environmental
pollution contaminating the food chain. However, Agriculture Secretary
Mike Johanns believes that this rejection “clearly illustrates that
South Korean officials are determined to find an excuse to reject all
beef products from the United States.“
