Philippines Bans Fishing
By the 1990s, heavy fishing had
caused fish species to diminish to only 1/3 in the Apo Reef off the
coast of Mindoro island.
This alarming reduction has led Philippines
officials to tighten banning fishing laws. "It has been declared a
'no-take zone' to allow the reef and the various species around it
ample time to recover from years of fishing," said Gregg Yan of the
World Wildlife Fund-Philippines.
