Japan Prepares for Whale Hunting

10/24/07-- While Japan prepares for hunting 50 humpback whales in the Antarctic over the coming southern hemisphere summer and 935 minke whales for scientific research, the environmental group Greenpeace is satellite tracking 19 humpback whales as they travel from the South Pacific back to Antarctic waters this whaling season, to prove Japan does not need to kill whales to study them.

In addition, Greenpeace is collecting skin samples to sequence DNA of every whale they encounter. "We do not have to kill the whales for any of the research we are doing. We do not even have to hurt them," said Greenpeace whale researcher Nan Hauser. Those against whale hunting say that most of the whale meat ends up in Japanese supermarkets and restaurants and that Japan rarely publishes its scientific findings.

Whales, magnificent animals, are exploited for research but mostly food. As long as there is a market for their meat, the brutal hunt for whales will continue. As Christians, we need to take a stand and defend God's animals too often victimized; transitioning to a plant-based diet makes a strong statement for God's Creation.
