Lobsters Do Feel Pain
A long and heated debate
between animal advocates, scientists, chefs and others might be
coming to an end. A new study published in New Scientist this
month, conducted by Robert Elwood, an expert in animal behavior
at Queen's University, Belfast, showed that crustaceans feel
pain. The study involved daubing acetic acid on to the antennae
of 144 prawns to which in turn began grooming and rubbing the
affected antenna, while leaving untouched ones alone. According
to Prof. Elwood this response is "consistent with an
interpretation of pain experience".
