HSUS Sues USDA over Downer Cattle Loophole
As a result of the recent undercover video at a California
slaughterhouse were cows who were unable to walk were forced through
abusive and cruel measures to pass inspection, The Humane Society of the
United States (HSUS) sued the federal government on Wednesday over what
it said is a legal loophole that allows "downer" cows (sick or crippled
cattle unable to walk) into the food supply. The HSUS is asking the USDA
to close the loophole to protect consumers and ensure the humane
treatment of animals. In the lawsuit, citing USDA documents, HSUS states
downer cows are about 50 times more likely to have mad cow disease since
the disease weakens their muscles, making them prone to falls.
