After last year's biggest beef recall in U.S. history followed by a
proposal by the USDA to ban the slaughter of "downer" cows, finally the
Obama administration made the proposal permanent in order to minimize the
chance that mad cow disease could enter the food supply. Tom Vilsack,
Secretary of Agriculture, said the ban was "a step forward for both food
safety and the standards for humane treatment of animals."
It is great news that these suffering cows will be spared of a terrible
death and will hopefully be quickly and humanely euthanized. Probably, with
the exposure of the cruelty of factory farming more people will decide to
adopt a healthy and compassionate plant-based diet for the sake of all of
God's Creation: our bodies, God's animals and the environment.
