Australians Favor Cage-Free Eggs
With Woolworths, the Australian supermarket giant chain, shifting to
free-range eggs by almost half of the egg brands it sells, it is
expected to speed up a consumer-driven switch to free-range and
barn-laid eggs. Woolworths' fresh food general manager Michael Batycki
said, "As demand for free-range and barn-laid increases, through the
economies of scale we should see a greater level of affordability."

While it’s not necessary to eat eggs in order to have a healthy,
well-balanced diet, the shifting to cage-free eggs is a positive move to
reduce the suffering of egg-laying hens. However, consumers should be
aware that the “cage-free” term does not necessarily mean “cruelty-free”
or that these hens are able to exercise their God-given instincts. At
the end, all egg-laying hens end up slaughtered.
