“Superbugs”
John Conly, Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance at the University of Calgary, Canada, discusses the issue of the emergence of "superbugs" due to the overuse of antibiotics in agri-business. According to Conly, the factory farming industry uses at least 1000-fold more antibiotics in terms of absolute tonnage compared with use in humans. This in turn enables bacteria to become resistant to these overused antibiotics allowing them to mutate, and thus creating "superbugs" that humans are unable to render.

It is horrifying that the animal agriculture industry does not seem to care about anything beyond their profit. The overuse of antibiotics in farmed animals is a real and very serious issue that future generations will have to face to a great extent. Being stewards of God's Creation implies mindfulness in our choices. Choosing to adopt a plant-based diet sends the message that we do not agree with what factory farming is doing to God's Earth, God's animals and our health.
