Massachusetts Considers How Farmed Animals Should Be Confined

The two bills legislators are considering in Massachusetts in regards to how farmed animals should be confined, if at all, has created a heated debate among animal welfare supporters and factory farm supporters. The Humane Society of the United States proposes a ban on extreme confinement of animals such as gestation and veal crates, which to most people is just common sense. However, depicting the unethical and uncaring views of supporters of factory farming, here is a comment by Richard Bonanno, president of the Farm Bureau, in reference to veal crates: “I don’t know how a calf feels about it,” ... “We put kids in car seats and kids scream, but there is a safety factor. Is that inhumane?”

How is it possible that anyone defends the extreme confinement of God’s farmed animals when it obviously causes suffering and pain? Sadly, this is a clear example where profit trumps compassion. By supporting these industries we are saying we approve of the egregious treatment of sentient beings, which clearly goes against Jesus’ teachings of compassion, mercy and love.
