Fewer Animals Killed for Food in the US in 2011 vs 2008

Good news! In 2011, more than one billion fewer land animals were killed in the United States compared to 2008, according to the annually-released USA slaughter totals by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The decrease seems to be due to more people eating vegetarian meals and vegetarianism becoming more main stream.

Correction 1/23/12: This website stated that there were one billion fewer animals slaughtered in 2011 vs 2008. Actually, the number is 250,000 fewer animals (updated in the article as well.) The cumulative number of fewer animals slaughtered since 2008 is 1.1 billion. Still good news!]

People are thinking more about their food choices and this is reflected in the number of animals killed for food in 2011. Fewer of God's farmed animals killed for taste and profit means a deeper understanding of how our food choices have consequences on all of God's Creation.
