A case of BSE, most commonly known as mad cow disease, has been
confirmed in a dairy cow in California. This is the nation's fourth
confirmed case since 2003. The USDA says this case poses no threat to
the public because the cow never entered the food chain.

I don't think that this new case of BSE should surprise those who
are informed about the unethical practices of animal-based
agriculture. BSE infects a cow when the animal has been fed infected
feed containing the remains of the brain of a cow with this disease.
In the U.S., it is supposedly illegal to feed the brain and spinal
chord of cows back to cows; however, the little surveillance that
exists over animal-agriculture makes it hard to know what regulations
are being enforced or not. What we know for certain is that animal
agriculture continues to engage in very unnatural practices such as
making cows, who are herbivores, into carnivores and even cannibals.
Animal agriculture poses much risk to public health.
