Factory Farm Workers Carry Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

It seems antibiotic-resistant bacteria hitch rides on hog farm employees, which concerns public health officials. A recent study reported in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that 10 of the 22 workers at hog factory farms in North Caroline who were tested carried potentially deadly bacteria. The New York Times highlights this issue and states that “86 percent of the workers in the study carried the S. aureus bacteria, compared with about one-third of the population at large, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

Factory farming is contributing to the rise and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which puts the world at risk of an epidemic that we might not be able to stop. So, instead of sitting back and being witnesses of this problem, we should participate in the solution by not supporting animal agriculture and instead transitioning to a plant-based diet.
