1. Activist Feedback
Rick Hershey writes:
There was
only 25% of the usual large crowd for the St. Louis Earth Day
Festival, most likely because of some rain and a bad weather forecast.
George helped tremendously with the entire setup, and then he
staffed the booth for several hours. He also brought the case of
Primal Strips that I had shipped to him.Julia staffed the table as
she so wonderfully does every year at this event, and she bought some
vegan treats for us as well as bringing the PCRM booklets.Cindy
staffed the booth for a few hours, helped with the entire breakdown,
and then stoically weathered the rain and the bomb threat (an
unattended backpack - later cleared) while I got the car.
We
handed out from the table about 100 of an assortment of CVA and other
literature.
We also handed out about 125 Primal
Strips.Twelve signed up for the e-newsletter, one of whom indicated
interest in volunteering for CVA.
I helped with setup and
breakdown, and otherwise mostly let the others staff the booth while I
worked the crowd. I handed out 600 “Another Inconvenient Truth,” about
90% of which went to teenagers and people in their 20s.

Why Civil
Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict by Erica
Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan
This important book reports the
careful study of 323 campaigns to overthrow the government, to become
liberated from colonial rule, or to secede between 1900 and 2006. The
authors found that nonviolent resistance was twice as likely as
violent campaigns to succeed. In fact, nonviolent resistance was equal
to or more successful than violence regardless of the type of
government against which the campaign was working, from democratic to
authoritarian. Further, successful nonviolent efforts were far more
likely to result in democracies than successful violent campaigns, and
the risk of civil war within ten years of a nonviolent campaign was
far less.
The authors identified several the reasons that
civil resistance is effective. It can recruit from a large segment of
the population, unlike violent movements, which are comprised
overwhelmingly of young men. Such broad public support is more likely
if the regime responds to peaceful protests with violence. A broadly
sympathetic population can effectively shut down the economy and the
government with boycotts, strikes, and other forms of economic
resistance. As a consequence, economic and military elites, who would
be hesitant to side with a violent movement for fear of reprisals
against them, can find joining a nonviolent movement enticing,
particularly if the regime is losing its grip on power. By drawing on
a large segment of the population, nonviolent movements features a
wide range of skills, enhancing adaptability as government responds to
the challenges posed by the movement.
Participation in
violent movements, either directly or indirectly by providing food,
shelter, or other kinds of support, tends to be more dangerous,
discouraging participation. And, with a smaller group of people
involved, it is often easier to eliminate an entire violent movement
than a broad-based nonviolent movement.
This book finds that
nonviolent civil resistance can be an effective strategy. There have
been occasional voices among animal advocates defending violent
tactics. Nonetheless, the movement has remained remarkably nonviolent.
Whether or not violence on behalf of nonhumans could ever be justified
ethically, from a practical standpoint there are good reasons to decry
this approach.
