1. The August Issue of “The Peaceable Table” Is Now Online.

Contents include:

  • A Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom is provided by the story of Bonnie, a Hereford calf who, when about to be shipped to auction with her family members, escaped into a nearby woods. A contest opened between those who wanted to hunt or capture her and send her to hell, and those (including a family of deer) who wanted to shelter her.
  • In strong contrast to today's commercial concept of hens as "egg machines," in ancient times the hen was seen as the ultimate image of motherhood. See the Editor's Corner Guest Essay, "The Hen is Symbol of Motherhood" by Karen Davis.
  • One of the NewsNotes tells the poignant story of two cows named Love and Hope, the latter blind, who as calves grew up together but were separated at eight months. When they were about to be reunited months later, Hope recognized the voice of her beloved seeing-eye buddy and responded joyfully.
  • Robert Ellwood looks at Holly Roberts' 2004 book Vegetarian Christian Saints--150 of them--in a "Did You Miss This One?" review.
  • David Hartley, kindly physician-philosopher of the early eighteenth century, is our August Pioneer. A vegetarian, he outlines his rationale for compassionate eating in the course of his major book Man: his Frame, his Duty, and his Expectations.
  • This month's Recipe, for Vegan Pasta Bake, looks so tempting even on the page that one's mouth begins to water. Try it!

Toward the renewal of "the primal paradise, lost yet forever here . . ."
