1. Activist Feedback

Five volunteers and Ben, a Vegan Outreach staff member, leafleted at Cincinnati Winter Jam. Ben writes:

This was a great event with wonderful volunteers! These were all veteran vegan volunteers, so they knew what to do. We passed out a little more than 2,400 leaflets (as we were able to reuse some), taking shifts to warm up in the cars.

2. Screening of “A Prayer for Compassion” in Youngstown, OH

This free event will start at 2:30 on Sunday, May 19 at Ohev Tzedek Temple Social Hall, 5245 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown, OH.

CVA chair Dr. Stephen Kaufman and Jewish Veg Executive Director Jeffrey Spitz Cohan will participate in an open Q&A afterward.

3. When Will the Horror End?

The extreme violence and unfathomable number of victims associated with factory farming in the United States and throughout the world constitute that a crime that, arguably, is unparalleled in human history. Past genocides have been horrific, but when the victims were dead the genocides stopped. Factory farming, designed to appeal to humans’ insatiable desire for flesh and other animal products, thrives with no end in sight.

Though the prospects for animals currently imprisoned on farms are grim, institutionalized animal abuse might eventually end. Over the next few weeks I will consider the prospects of the following possible scenarios, with the caveat that about the only thing one can predict with confidence is that predictions will prove to be wrong.

  1. Animal welfare reforms will eventually result in humane farming practices, which will eventually be superseded by widespread veganism.
  2. The “abolitionist approach” will result in the end of animal exploitation and abuse.
  3. Considerations other than animal protectionism, such as environmentalism, health, or disgust at consuming flesh, will result in widespread veganism.
  4. Collapse of human civilization as we know it will make widespread, institutionalized animal abuse impossible.
