The division of animals into domestic pets vs. domestic food vs. wild are arbitrary, I think - they are distinctions that make people feel better . . . I felt the same way when there was that huge stink about using cats and dogs for fur coats a few years back - I didn't see how that was any different than using foxes and minks . . .

I always heard that the dietary restrictions against pork in so many religions were because pigs carry diseases that humans can get from eating them - so not eating pork protects a population from those diseases.
