Establishing the Rights of Animals in Law and Human Consciousness

Dear David:

We agree with you about how things are now, and about all these problems that face us. So, let’s talk about new ways of raising the awareness of the plight of animals and introducing the new paradigm at the same time.

Who are the largest group of people who care deeply about animals? They’re the people who have companion animals. The problem with most of these people is that they refer to their companions as “pets”. And say that they “own them”. This kind of attitude plays right into the hands of the exploiters. On the other side of this coin are the animal adoption organizations, who actually refer to what they do as adoptions, which is opposite to purchasing. Instead of talking about “rights” to these organizations and tens of millions of people who have companion animals, let’s try enlightening these people with the idea that these animals have “personhood” without even calling it that. If we could convince these organizations to begin expanding their vision by promoting something like this:

You are not buying a pet that you will own, you are adopting a member of your family, in the same way you would adopt a human child and lovingly care and protect him or her.

Many of these people actually feel this way in their hearts, but never expressed it in these terms.

Without even mentioning the “rights” word, this would introduce the paradigm, and hopefully change people’s thinking about their relationship to these animals. We might even get the large welfare organizations to sign on to something like this, because it’s non-threatening.

With this group of people are those who have companion horses, pigs, and rabbits, which will open the door to thinking about other farmed animals in similar terms.

Once we find an avenue that works, we can expand it to other areas of the rights paradigm. We just need to keep it simple if we want to reach the masses.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
