Establishing the Rights of Animals in Law and Human Consciousness

Dear John:

Thank you for writing.

Your problem is out of our specific expertise, but it has become a very common one which stemmed from the root cause of animal exploitation, with which we are quite familiar, and even though you are not part of the exploitation, you have been caught up in the fear, a lot of which is real.

People need to be educated about the need to eliminate the laws that make animals the property of humans, and to give animals the right not to be subjected to human exploitation and abuse, but unfortunately the pit bull is a “bad” starting point for such an argument, as it only conjures up fear. And because these people don’t know how to deal with the problem, and rely on their fears, they scapegoat all pit bulls.

Many different breeds of dogs can become violent. It’s not limited to pit bulls, so in a way what they are doing is a form of discrimination. But on the other hand, people who say that they love their dog or cat will kill and/or eat another animal, which is also a form of discrimination. Thus, we need to change our attitude about the way we address all animal exploitation.

If pit bulls are equal to all other dogs, and thus have the same “rights and freedoms”, then all animals should have the same rights and freedoms. There should be no discrimination.

Until more people begin to think and act this way, you’re probably going to have to comply with the regulations.

We believe the reason that many of your signatures were disqualified was because they were not from adults from the community. As we understand the law, you have the right to represent the issue at a future date (check you state and local laws).

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
