Fear of Dying
Comments by Frank L. Hoffman - 14 Dec 2004
I have been pondering Heidi's email since I read it and her several comments about her fear of dying being limited to not having made a meaningful mark in this world by making it a better place.
The first things that came to mind were that only Superman was able to leap building in a single bound, and only God and the angels can travel at the speed of thought. The rest of us have to do it step by step, but even so, Jesus told us in John 14:12 that we would do even greater works than He was able to do.
Sometimes our failure to accomplish more is because we're more afraid of failure along the way. If we know something is "wrong" in our heart, and we fail to do something to correct it, even if only a part of it, then we may not be accomplishing everything that is in our power.
Perfect love does indeed cast our out all kinds of fears, but we all need to do something with that love. Love is not passive, it is active. But learning to live that way is also a step by step process. It's like having a set of old fashioned balances; we need to weigh our choices on the side of love, and doing that which is more loving until it becomes second nature.
Paul said, "to live is Christ, and to die is gain." This is a no fear death, because Paul believed he did his best as a follower and apostle of Jesus. We shouldn't worry about what we haven't done, we need to look forward and say what can I do.
Mike said he also didn't fear death, only a lingering and suffering time that often leads up to that death. But even in the process of dying, we can bring life and love to others.
I seriously doubt that there is one of us who couldn't do a little more to make this a better world, but in the process let us not forget those things we have already accomplished, and with this in mind there should be no fear.
In the Love of the Lord,
Return to Fear of Dying
