Refuge From The Fire

Comments by Gerry Coffey - 12 Oct 2000

At the height of the Vietnam War, a mangy Thai puppy came to epitomize for me the wanton death and destruction of innocent victims and habitat that pay the price for human folly.

The puppy, temporarily rescued by my children, eventually survived 3 near death situations before finally being killed by a truck.

I had escaped Vietnam on the Eve of the massive Tet Offensive, the bloodiest massacre of the Vietnam War. I didn't realize how much it affected me until the plight of the innocent pup came to symbolize, for me, the futility of war.

That flash back came to mind when I saw the blaze of Nature's fury enveloping the forests and the skies as innocent victims once more pay the price for human irresponsibility.
