Heifer Project International - Inhumanity in the Name of Humanity
Comments by: Neville Fowler - 11 Apr 2005

I totally agree with those who oppose the activities of the Heifer Project. In the UK we have a similar 'charity' called 'Send A Cow'. It draws much support from the churches here. These organisations, whether intentionally or not, are a foot in the door for the large scale meat industry. They promulgate the untruth that more meat and dairy equals better health. Many other groups, like Oxfam, Christian Aid, World Vision, the Salvation Army, to name but a few, have joined this bandwagon of providing animals for people in the third world. Especially at Christmas their appeals focus on this idea.

I am a great believer in the principle that it is better to light candles than to curse the darkness - not that it isn't sometimes appropriate to do the latter as well and I have done plenty of it myself in my time. What I mean is that those who feel as I do could do everything possible to support the alternatives. I do not know what the alternatives are in the USA but here in the UK we have VEGFAM and HIPPO (Help International Plant Protein Organization) - the latter founded in 1999 and still directed by yours truly! In a small way we are at least giving vegetarians and vegans the chance to support humanitarian aid to those in need in Africa, eastern Europe, and the Balkan countries, without the risk of having their money used to buy meat or support livestock breeding, raising and slaughter. At the best we are saving the lives of some people in the 'third world' and showing many more that meat is not necessary for a healthy balanced diet thus encouraging them to turn a deaf ear to the meat promoters.

We are happy to receive US$ or other non-UK cheques, electronic transfers direct to our bank account, or Paypal donations over the internet!
