Heifer Project International - Inhumanity in the Name of Humanity
Comments by: RC - 3 Feb 2006
How do we all feel about Heifer International? Perhaps there has been a thread on this before. But, I don't think I agree with the charity. The give impoverished people in other countries animals, basically used for eating. I am not convinced that meat-eating is the way to solve world hunger, but Heifer is. In fact, the who thing feels really wrong to me.
My church (Episcopal) is doing their annual Pancake Supper for Shrove Tuesday. The Children's Choir is organizing it so they can donate a whole bunch of animals with the money they charge. I don't think this is the way to teach our young children compassion, or to teach the children in other countries compassion (often, the children who are given the animals witness and participate in the slaughter).
On a more personal note, they donate rabbits for purposes of eating. Rabbit meat is not only a bad choice for nutrition, the animals are usually imbred, deliberately (they use rabbits because the reproduce quickly). And, I love house rabbits.
