Heifer Project International - Inhumanity in the Name of Humanity
Comments by: Dena Hunt - 22 Oct 2003

I have just received this dreadful catalog. I'm sure many know which one I mean. What on earth is the right response here--besides the trash can, of course, which accomplishes nothing.

Zum beispeil--leather has been fashionable for about three years now, and this year, it's been taken to a new low: lambskin shoes and kid suede slippers for Christmas.

Ok, so I have called Marshall Fields and Bloomingdales customer service and said things like: "I'm calling to ask a favor. You've always had leather products in your catalog, and those of us who might find this objectionable simply haven't ordered these items, but this year it's just too much. Even though there are a great many of us, we do recognize that we're a minority among your customers. By the way, I wish you'd pass it along to somebody that good design is itself worth its price and does not have to justify itself in "real" leather. Anyway, this catalog is just too much "in your face" to people who find this product not just offensive but even morally repulsive. I have to ask you to remove my name from your mailing list....." (The reaction, by the way, is always good--sometimes agreement, sometimes curiosity, and of course, I hope it's true when the recording that comes on before someone answers says, "This call may be monitored..." I hope it is monitored.) I have read that it's just this kind of action from consumers that has produced the "faux fur" craze. I know I have noticed a definite decline in the number of furs at the symphony lately--almost none. It's not "fashionable" any more.

Anyway, Heifer International is a whole other matter. How should one respond to this awful thing? Pictures of children who have received little baby animals as gifts from charitable folks--animals they will be taught to exploit and slaughter. The spiritual damage to the children is as bad as what will happen to the little calf. What should one do?
