After reading this, I can't weep enough tears. All I can do is try as one person to make things better, to appeal to people's better natures, to pray for the victims and for the strength to persevere through the horrors I know I'll see and hear about the rest of my life.

I agree with your assessment. To my mind, the disconnect between God's message of mercy and the Church, which claims to preach the word of God but which ignores and sometimes participates in the suffering of animals for pleasure, borders on blasphemy. When the Church repeatedly violates the spirit of God's peaceful ideal - as when it stubbornly remains silent about atrocities - one is forced to choose between serving God and affiliating with the Church.
