I would like to change the scenario a little.
The animal has never sinned - the person - if He/She is a Christian has one or more Guardian Angels watching over them who is able to save them regardless of any difficulties. So my answer is:
Hebrews 1:14 "Are they not all Ministering Spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
So save the animal/s and the angels will save the Human if that Human is a Christian - if they are not, then let the Angels decide - that is their present job.

Since
