Dear Friend,
Today, I have groundbreaking news from the United Kingdom. Both Wales and Scotland have just outlawed dog racing, ending nearly a century of cruelty to greyhounds!
That’s right, on Wednesday at 9:10 pm, the Greyhound Racing (Offenses) bill passed by a vote of 70-27 at the Holyrood. The proceedings took less than one minute! Read my commentary in the National about this historic moment.
This groundbreaking campaign was prompted by the most popular Parliamentary petition in Holyrood history, launched by Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation in 2019. Mark Ruskell MSP followed by forming the #UnboundTheGreyhound Coalition in 2023—and the rest is history!
Ending dog racing in Scotland was a team effort from start to finish! Congratulations and cheers to all our fellow #UnboundTheGreyhound Coalition members, particularly OneKind, SAGE and Say No to Greyhound Racing in Scotland. Together, we made all of our hopes and dreams for the greyhound come true.
But wait, there’s more!
Amazingly, a prohibition on racing passed in Wales on Tuesday! The Welsh Parliament voted to protect greyhounds by a margin of 39-10, forcing the closure of the infamous Valley Greyhounds in Hengoed. Congratulations to our allies with the RSPCA, Blue Cross, Dogs Trust, Hope Rescue and Greyhound Rescue Wales who worked together as #CutTheChase to achieve this historic milestone.
Are you ready to keep fighting? Then please save the date for our next Greyhounds Around the Globe conference taking place in London on November 7. Stay tuned for more details and to register for this unique opportunity to meet greyhound advocates and lawmakers from around the world.
For the dogs,
Christine A. Dorchak, Esq.
