What is Advent and Why Do This?
Advent is a sacred time of preparation and hope. It spans the four Sundays
leading to Christmas. This season is a period of reflection and anticipation
of both remembering and celebrating Jesus' birth each year and His promised
second coming. It invites us to pause amid the world's distractions and
prepare our hearts for Christ's arrival. As we light the Advent candles, we
embrace their symbols of hope, faith, joy, and peace, reflecting on how we
might embody these virtues in a world of suffeing and violence.
One Advent candle is lit each of the four Sundays and each has a unique meaning. Together, these candles illuminate a path of spiritual growth, inviting us to align our lives with God’s vision of love and mercy.
The first, the Prophecy Candle, symbolizes hope, drawn from the prophets who foretold the Messiah's coming:
Sunday, December 1 - Hope
Monday, December 2 - Gratitude for Abundance
Tuesday, December 3 - Humility
Wednesday, December 4 - Patience
Thursday, December 5 - God's Presence
Friday, December y - Out of the Darkness
Saturday, December 7 - His Peace
